WAR DAMAGE IN HONG KONG
In reply to your letter of 23rd June 1948 regarding your claim in respect of property lost or damaged in Hong Kong as a result of the war, I am to refer to the statement issued by the Government of Hong Kong, a copy of which is enclosed. As explained in the statement the Hong Kong Government have recommended that no compensation should be paid for war damage. In these circumstances it is regretted that no payment can be made from Hong Kong Government Funds in respect of general war damage compensation claim. The statement is of course not concerned with any claims where a legal liability may be involved, and any such claims should be referred direct to the Government of Hong Kong.
I am to add that in order to meet the difficulties of people who were in captivity in the Far East and who on release returned to live permanently in this country there is a scheme under which limited grants may be made to enable such persons to purchase necessary furniture, household goods etc. A statement is enclosed setting out the circumstances in which application for grants under this scheme may be considered. If these circumstances are applicable to your case, and you have not already applied for such a grant, you may now wish to do so. The extension of this scheme to other British subjects who have suffered hardship through losses of private chattels in occupied British territories in the Far East and who have returned to this country and intend to remain here permanently, is under consideration and it is hoped that particulars will be available shortly.
N. Rogers, Esq.
c/o Mr. I. George,

Dover.
Yours faithfully,
